This SEL (social emotional lesson) is THE perfect picture book to paint the relatable picture for GROWTH MINDSET and PERSEVERANCE with a famous figure we have all heard about in our lifetime. Adults AND students can relate to this book. A powerful message of what having a growth mindset, setting goals, and having perseverance can truly do to an individual who portrays these characteristics.

Summary:

The book, Salt in His Shoes, tells the story of Michael Jordan as a young boy. He grew up playing basketball with his brothers, however, he was the shortest boy on the court. He was often teased by one of the taller boys. After losing a game one day, Michael asked his mother what he needed to do to grow taller. His mom suggested putting salt in his shoes, being patient, and praying everyday. Michael did this for several months while practicing basketball.

Months later, he wasn’t any taller and was starting to feel discouraged. Michael’s dad talked to him and explained that he didn’t need to be tall to be a good player. He needed to be determined, work hard, and practice. This gave Michael the confidence to go back to the basketball court with his brothers. He was able to score the winning point for his team and went on to become a basketball star.

** Within this product you will find:

· An opportunity for students to recall details from the story.

· Make real-life connections to discuss/write about.

· Story Vocabulary: This activity gives each student the opportunity see each vocabulary word, read a sentence from the text with the word in it, and then provide the definition of the word in their own words based on context clues.

· There is also a teacher page which gives the actual definition of each vocabulary word.

· An opportunity for students to analyze different quotes within the text.

· 2 different writing prompts.

· A research project opportunity where students are given certain questions to research information about Michael Jordan and then write an informative paragraph about what they found in their research.

· (2) different pages where students can record their research findings.

· A teacher page with the answers to all of the questions to answer in their research paragraphs.

· (2) final copy papers for students to write the final drafts of their research papers on.

· A goal setting page that not only gives the definition of a goal, but example questions for students to answer when writing goals. And then a space for students to write e of their own goals that they want to achieve.

· An activity (class contest) where students design their own shoe using their creative strengths. They can decide the colors of the shoe and one special power that the shoe can have.
