Description
Bring fall excitement into your math block with this Fall Festival Math PBL Project Place Value Budgeting Money Area & Perimeter 4th Grade resource! A festival students plan themselves!
In this Fall Festival Math PBL, students become festival planners with one important challenge: create a fun event while staying within a $500 budget! Working with partners or small groups, students select attractions, purchase decorations, plan a snack stand, calculate expenses, and design a festival map.
This seasonal project gives math a meaningful purpose. Every choice affects the budget, encouraging students to calculate carefully, compare options, and explain their decisions.
Recommended grade levels: 2nd–4th grade. The full project is especially well suited to grades 3–4. Second graders can participate with teacher support, repeated addition for snack calculations, and a focus on measuring lengths and counting grid units.

MATH WITH A REAL-WORLD PURPOSE
Students practice adding expenses, subtracting to determine remaining funds, and using repeated addition or multiplication to calculate snack quantities and costs. They apply measurement skills while planning their festival layout and explore perimeter and area at the appropriate grade level.
The project also encourages estimation, comparison, mathematical reasoning, and explaining solutions. An optional planning-board extension invites students to expand their work with ticket packages, graphs, and expected profit.
DIFFERENTIATE ACROSS GRADES 2–4
Second grade: Provide quantities for snack calculations, use repeated addition, and focus on lengths and grid units.
Third grade: Incorporate multiplication for snack costs and perimeter calculations for festival spaces.
Fourth grade: Extend quantity-and-cost calculations and require both area and perimeter for rectangular attractions and booths.
