SEL & Character Education

Scribble Stones provides a natural opportunity to teach students that purpose isn’t determined by size or appearance and that seemingly small acts can have a powerful impact on others.

Students explore:

Kindness • Purpose • Perseverance • Self-Worth • Creativity • Helping Others • Empathy • Joy • Making a Difference • Positive Thinking

The Brightening Someone’s Day activity asks students to identify ways they can personally make someone else’s day better. This is while the Kindness Stones activity encourages students to give encouraging or complimentary messages to others.

Art & STEAM Integration

One of the highlights is the Create a Scribble Stone activity. Students can decorate an actual stone—or use the included paper alternative—with pictures, shapes, dots, lines, and positive words. They then complete a reflection explaining who or what they created their stone for, how they hope it makes someone feel, and the message they want it to spread.

The What Could This Become? partner activity adds a creative STEAM component. Students brainstorm new uses for ordinary objects such as cardboard boxes, paper plates, jars, sticks, paper bags, string, and bottle caps. This reinforces the message that creativity means there isn’t always just one right answer.

Please note: This is a companion resource. A copy of Scribble Stones by Diane Alber is not included and is needed to complete the book-specific activities.
