I love you day….
Even though National I Love You Day is on October 14th each year. Many would think that Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to make “I love you day” as well!
I know, I know, there are many that perceive Valentine’s Day to be a “Hallmark Holiday” or a day that brings them sadness, an empty feeling, or resentment. I have been there, personally, so I get it. BUT, celebrating an “I love you” day can be a positive day for EVERYONE…especially students/children!
Please read the following on what I turned this day into for my students in the classroom. HOWEVER, you could also do this at home for your FAMILY as well!
National I Love You Day
Is a day that I celebrated each year in my classroom. However, since October 14th (The actual national day) has passed for this year….I thought that I would share some ideas/activities that I did on that day for those of you who would like to incorporate “I love you” day in their classrooms or at home for VALENTINE’s DAY!!!
Valentine’s Day is NOT just a holiday for “couples” …. It is a day to show extra love to those who are dear to you!
LOVE is such an important virtue to teach and practice within our classrooms. Loving each
other for our differences, loving each other for what we have in common, loving each other through each other’s
weakness AND strengths.
** This is the perfect time to brainstorm as a whole group in the
classroom about all the different “types” of love there are.**
I am going to describe to you below on how I incorporated it into my classroom each year. PLEASE feel free to STEAL my idea 🙂 and incorporate it into your classroom for Valentine’s Day as well!

First: Parent I love you letters-
An email was sent to all of the student’s parents in class asking them to write a heartfelt note/letter to their child telling him/her how much they love them (and to give some reasons why). That day I sent home home a blank white envelope with the student’s name on the front and asked each parent to seal the letter within the envelope. I made sure to set the “due date” for when the letters were due back a couple of days before I needed them. (So, if you are planning on doing this for Valentine’s (“I love you day”) then, you have PLENTY of time if you do it soon! 🙂
On the morning of, students walked into the classroom to see their names on envelopes hanging from the ceiling, but they had no clue what they were for!
Here are some pictures of my
students reading the notes.
(They LOVED it!)
Second: “I love you because…” note from teacher.
I took a picture with each of my students (didn’t tell them why) and then put that photo
along with an individual note from me telling each of them why I love them. I gave specific reasons.
In my opinion, that makes it more special and personalized to them.
I took their picture in front of a heart photo backdrop I had purchased
off of Amazon.

Third: I decorated the room to make the experience
as engaging as possible for my students. They thought
it was the “coolest” thing!
I put Hershey Kisses out on their desks, hung hearts from the ceiling, made
“You Matter” and “I Love You Day” posters on the school poster machine, and purchased
heart “stress” sensory toys for each of them.
